WATSAN essentially focusses on water
and on the aquatic environment.

In 1998 the new National Water Act was promulgated. That very same year the National Environmental Management Act came into being, with much emphasis on water and the aquatic environment. More legislation followed, with a number of regulations in terms of that legislation.

It became compulsory to register and eventually license activities that impact in any way on the aquatic environment.

These impacts include taking water from a water resource, put anything into a resource (such as pollutants) or change anything in a stream or on banks of a stream.

Apart from general advice with regard to water and water resources, WATSAN has been established to expedite the licencing process. Moreover, WATSAN produces technical reports that are required for licensing.
